Bust Cire Trudon The Slave

Why be born a slave is the name given by the sculptor and painter Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) to a series of busts he executed around 1870.
At the height of his career, benefiting from the protection of Napoleon III, Carpeaux received from the city of Paris the order for the Observatory Fountain, from which he diverted the imposed subject - the four cardinal points - by replacing them with four allegorical characters embodying Europe, Africa, Asia and America. It is within the framework of the preparatory study on Africa that the bust of the captive Negress was born.
Faithful to his interpretation of the movement, he represents the slave with the bust hobbled in an oblique twist expressing revolt. The story goes that the woman who served as a model would also have posed for the realization of the "Capresse of the colonies" 1861 - by Charles Cordier.
