Invited in 1940 by the Japanese government to direct the production of industrial art in the country, Charlotte Perriand discovered a mindset, a way of life and an architecture in conformity with the modernist precepts that she defended with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. The exhibitions she organises in Japan, "Sélection, Tradition, Création" and "Proposition d’une synthèse des arts", her publications, her furnitures, her creations in Tôkyô and in Paris testify to the links she has woven between the two western and eastern cultures.
"Out of all the Westerners who hav worked in Japan, she is probably the one who had the greatest influence on the world of Japanese design", said designer Sôri Yanagi, her former assistant. Designed from unpublished archives of Charlotte Perriand, notes and drawings that reveal the freedom of thought of a great designer facing challenges of a complex period, this work is a valuable lesson for new generations of architects and designers, but also for people nowadays.
